VENTURES AFRICA – Nigerian billionaire and the fifth richest man in Africa, Dr Mike Adenuga Jnr. on Tuesday donated 500 million naira ($3.2 million) to support ongoing post flood disaster management efforts in Bayelsa State, a Nigerian oil-rich region ravaged by floods in October.

The Governor of the state, Mr. Seriake Dickson, said in an official statement that he led a delegation from the state to the residence of Adenuga in Abuja, where a draft cheque of the sum was presented to him by Adenuga.

“The money will be judiciously used along with other donations received from public spirited individuals, corporate bodies, donor agencies both locally and internationally,” the governor said.

Mike Adenuga who owns Globacom, a major Nigerian telecoms company, has through various corporate social responsibilities proven to be a genuine supporter of African development.

His telecom company revived Nigeria’s football league after signing multimillion dollar deal to become the official partner of the league almost a decade back. This year, it reiterated its commitment with a $2.3 million signing.

Globacom also pioneered signing local stars in multimillion naira deals, as corporate ambassadors.

“I’m touched by the plight of the flood victims,” the Nigerian-born billionaire said, when communicating his reason for the donation.

On Tuesday, Pan Ocean Oil Nigeria Limited, an indigenous company, also donated relief materials worth millions of naira to victims of the recent flood in Edo State, another Nigerian region.

Mike Adenuga is the chairman of Conoil and Globacom, two Nigerian Stock Exchange-listed companies. Recently, he was rated the fifth richest man in Africa, with an estimated wealth of $4.6 billion.
